On ten historic gates of the Aurelian Walls, twenty banners featuring images of 21st-century Rome are displayed, created by 10 artists and 10 architectural studios from the latest generations.
This is a unique opportunity to showcase the most contemporary face of the city to the world, fostering in the new generations the inspiration to imagine themselves in the future through a constructive relationship with it.
Fifty years after Christo’s intervention at Porta Pinciana, Spazio Taverna launches the project Le 10 porte del futuro (“The 10 Gates of the Future”), which involves the installation of two banners for each of the ten historic gates of the city: those by the artists placed at the entrance, and those by the architects at the exit. For the first time in history, the Aurelian Walls are transformed into an open-air art gallery. In this way, emerging artists and architects step out of their studios and museums to engage directly with the public.
“The ten gates are all different, representing both near and distant horizons, dramatic or reassuring, aiming to restore the archaic sense of the entrances to the ancient city,” explains Marco Bassan. They symbolize both a barrier and, at the same time, the only means of connection between the outside and the inside.
